NEW Brisbane Lion Brendan Fevola says while thrilled to be joining a club now considered a genuine premiership chance, he had wanted to stay in Melbourne, preferably at Collingwood.

Fevola spoke to Triple M radio on Wednesday morning and revealed that he tried to get Collingwood president Eddie McGuire to help him get to the Magpies after the initial Lions-Carlton deal fell through.

The initial agreement collapsed on Thursday after Michael Rischitelli decided he wanted to remain a Lion.

Fevola then rang McGuire, urging him to try to secure a trade with the Blues. The Coleman Medallist said he had also been keen to play for St Kilda, but in the end he was pleased to have landed at the Lions.

"It's a terrible week to be a part of, I never thought I would be a part of it (trade week)," Fevola told McGuire’s breakfast show on Wednesday.

"I think Friday, about 10 o’clock, the [Brisbane] deal was off and I think I rang you [Eddie] and said: 'see what the Pies can do because I think it's over'.

"Then about half an hour later I think it [the Lions deal] was done."

Fevola and McGuire said Carlton didn't want to deal with its arch rival. "I wanted to go to the Pies but Eddie couldn’t get a deal done," Fevola said.

"I don’t think the Blues wanted to deal with the Pies but, yeah it would have been nice to stay in Melbourne but that’s the beauty about our game – it’s a national sport and you can just go anywhere I suppose.

"I would have loved to have gone to the Saints as well but I don’t think they could have fitted me in [their] salary cap."

Fevola said he hadn't spoken to Blues coach Brett Ratten since officially becoming a Lion, but had received plenty of messages from his former teammates.

He is likely to face his old team in round two next season and Fevola admitted it could be mentally challenging. "It’ll be interesting playing against the boys," he said.

"I’ve pretty much spoken to every player at Carlton. They’ve all either rang or texted, and when you do get those text messages it’s quite sad – what some of the boys say."

Fevola said he had lunch at Brisbane Lions skipper Jonathan Brown’s house at the weekend, where he became better-acquainted a few of his new teammates.
