The prolific midfielder was the Lions' fourth pick in last Thursday's NAB AFL Draft, and the No.32 pick overall.
Green knew a move from the Apple Isle, where he had played in a premiership for Clarence, was inevitable if he wanted to chase his boyhood dream.
"I was definitely going to be moving one way or the other if I got picked up; there was no chance of staying at home," he told lions.com.au on Tuesday.
That said, he sat on tenterhooks throughout Thursday night's draft, waiting for his name to be called. And when the Lions read his name at selection 32, his life changed in an instant.
"I had no idea at all," Green said of the Lions' decision to lock him in.
"No clubs [had] given me any idea. I went in and hoped for the best and it happened.
"I was really hoping to get picked up but I would have been happy with any pick. To get picked up by the Brisbane Lions at pick 32, I was really happy."
Green joins a growing entourage of Tasmanians plying their trade under coach Michael Voss.
He and Ryan Harwood played alongside one another for their state at the 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, while fellow youngsters Tom Collier and Aaron Cornelius round out an impressive group of Lions who also hail from Tassie.
And that's just the playing list. Throw in assistant coaches Jade Rawlings and Adrian Fletcher, along with club welfare manager Manny Lynch, and it makes for quite the contingent.
Now settling in Brisbane, the left-footer with the distinctive red hair is intent on getting to work.
"It's starting to sink in," Green said.
"It took a couple of days but once I got up here and met all the boys - blokes like [Jonathan] Browny, [Simon] Blacky and Luke Power - it really started to set in, so I'm really enjoying it and really looking forward to the next couple of months.
"I'm hoping to put a few kilos on and get a lot fitter ... I know I'd be hoping to play in the NAB Cup if everything goes to plan."
At 177cm, Green isn't tall but his pace and kicking shone during this year's national under 18 carnival.
He was unable to help Tasmania clinch the Division 2 title after puncturing a lung during the championships - Green was able to recover in time to star for Clarence in the Tasmanian Football League finals series - but his talents hadn't been missed by Lions officials.
"We paused a little bit before picking Josh," Lions talent manager Rob Kerr said following Thursday's national draft.
"The question there was, do we add another midfielder or do we go for a key-position player? We got a couple of tall boys but ... in the end, we felt Josh was too good a player to pass up."
