North Melbourne has received a blow on the eve of its match against Sydney on Saturday after scans on live-wire forward Matt Campbell’s injured ankle.

Club doctor Con Mitropoulos has been forced to rule the 22 year-old out for up to six weeks.

“It’s not the best outcome for Matt obviously and I am aware that there was some speculation suggesting he’d only miss one to two weeks,” Mitropoulos told kangaroos.com.au.

“Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the injury to the inferior syndesmosis, which is in the ankle.”

Campbell says he rolled his right ankle while playing for Kangaroos’ VFL affiliate North Ballarat against Coburg on Sunday.

"A Coburg player fell across my leg so I had his full weight bearing down on it as it rolled,” Campbell said.

“It happened at the first centre bounce of the second quarter, I got onto a loose ball going forward and changed direction as that player tackled me,” Campbell described.

“We both went to ground and I felt my ankle go numb underneath me. I thought I had just copped a bad knock on it until I tried to put weight on it…that’s when it collapsed.”

It’s been a week to forget for the 22 year-old after being dropped from the team that beat West Coast by 25 points.

He’ll spend the next two to three weeks in a moon boot before being able to start running.
