SAM MITCHELL will join Chris Grant and Corey McKernan in one of football's most unfortunate groups if the afl.com.au Brownlow predictor is proven correct.

The predictor, which closely analyses every game from the 2011 season, has the former Hawthorn captain polling 25 votes which would have him ahead of the rest of the field.

But Mitchell's decision to plead guilty to rough conduct on Geelong's Steve Johnson has made him ineligible for the award.

Grant in 1996 and McKernan the following year are the only two players to poll the most votes but not receive a medal because of ineligibility.

Mitchell's pain would result in gain to Bulldog Matthew Boyd and Swan Adam Goodes who have been predicted to poll level on 24 votes.

That result would hand Goodes his third Brownlow Medal, joining an illustrious group in Ian Stewart, Dick Reynolds, Hayden Bunton and Bob Skilton.

It would also be the second time he has shared the stage after his initial win in 2003 along with Nathan Buckley and Mark Ricciuto.

Hot favourite Chris Judd is predicted to finish three votes behind Boyd and Goodes with 21 while Melbourne's Brent Moloney and Tiger Trent Cotchin are expected to defy their team's inability to make the finals and finish in the top 10.

2009 winner and noted vote-winner Gary Ablett is expected to suffer from his move to Gold Coast this year.

Although Ablett has produced some of his best football, playing in just three wins could haunt him and see him poll 18 votes, which would be his lowest tally since 2006.
