THE WESTERN Bulldogs enter the second week of the split round on top of the ladder, but coach Rodney Eade isn't reading too much into his side's heights.

With Geelong still to play next Friday night, the Dogs are currently heading the competition with 12 wins and one draw from 14 games.

But Eade said their position on the table is irrelevant and is more focused on what their latest win does for their continued positive mindset.

"I don't think that really matters at this stage; it's just good to head into the break with a win," he said after the Dogs' 54-point win over Port Adelaide at TIO Stadium on Saturday night.

"It puts us where we want to be and it was good to get through the game. It was pretty tough after half time, our second-quarter break was able to break the game open.

"Full credit to Port, they were good after half time, they really fought hard and it was pretty tough after half time."

Eade said it's hard to assess whether the Dogs' five-win momentum will last over the mid-season break, but is pleased his players are about to be rewarded with a week off.

"The break has just come at the right time for us. You see Hawthorn, they had a few players have injuries and teams are just starting to feel the pinch," he said.

"We've been fortunate with our injuries but we've just had a few players who are just getting to the line at this stage, so the break has come at just the right time."

Eade praised the performance of his hard-working defence and credited it as one of the main aspects behind the Dogs' convincing display.

"Our defence is maturing," he said.

"We've got a reasonably young defence and we've had that for a while but I thought Stephen Tiller fitted in pretty well, Ryan Hargrave did a good job.

"Dale Morris was terrific, his body work was fantastic. Lindsay Gilbee and Tills (Tiller) and Hargrave as well gave us run and were prepared to run through the lines, which was terrific."

He praised the work of ruck duo Ben Hudson and Will Minson in the steamy conditions, but conceded the Dogs need to work on their efforts around the stoppages after being beaten by the Power midfield.

"Port was very good at the centre square bounces and I thought Huddo (Hudson) followed up, but our midfielders really didn't follow up enough," he said.

"Port are very good in that area but they certainly gave us a lesson tonight."

Eade said Ryan Griffen and Scott Welsh will be fine to play in two weeks after dislocating fingers, while Robert Murphy was fatigued when he came off limping in the final term.
