NORTH Melbourne coach Brad Scott is adamant his team has improved since last year, despite its slow start to the season.

The Kangaroos suffered their third straight loss when they lost to Fremantle in Perth last weekend, but Scott certainly isn't hitting the panic button.

"[We're coming up to] the fourth game of the year and we've got 18 to go after that," he said on Wednesday.

"I understand that everyone wants to start talking about season-defining games, but we've played three games.

"We've definitely improved from this time last year, so we’ve got to continue that improvement.

"We're getting the ball and we're giving ourselves an opportunity. We're just not efficient enough with our ball use."

North Melbourne had more possessions and just two fewer inside-50s than Freo in round four, but skill errors cost the Kangaroos dearly as they lost by 29 points.

"Our kicking wasn't good enough," Scott admitted.

"We gave Stephen Hill, in particular, a really easy shot at goal at a crucial time in the game.

"We didn't hurt the opposition when we had the ball in our hands, and we also gave the ball back to them on a couple of occasions.

"That's an area we've got to continue to work on."

But Scott said morale at the club remained high.

"We've got to get the performances on the board and we're confident things will turn," he said.

The Roos have had a horror draw which has seen them start the season with trips to Perth either side of a match against reigning premier Collingwood.

On Sunday, however, they get chance to open their account when they take on winless Richmond at Etihad Stadium.

But while North Melbourne has won seven of its past 10 games against the Tigers, Scott is taking nothing for granted.

"They're an exciting young team when they get up and playing well," he said.

"Any side with Cotchin and Foley and Jack Riewoldt can be very dangerous when the game's played on their terms.

"We’ve got to be aware of that and plan well for it."
