While most new recruits have just finished school, class was back in session this week for those who are preparing to join AFL ranks at the 16 clubs throughout Australia.

The AFLPA hosted its annual introductory camp in Melbourne as players were given an overview of the Players’ Association, as well as a taste of what life will be like as a footballer.

The Saints had five players participate in the two-day seminar in Albert Park.

Tommy Walsh, Nick Winmar, Will Johnson, Mark Hutchings and Danny Archer all attended the sessions that seek to prepare players for the road ahead and give them an outline of the AFLPA and support systems that are available throughout their career.

The AFLPA ran 124 first year players through a wide array of topics that they will need to be aware of both now and well into the future. They included anti-doping and illicit drug codes, racial vilification and diversity, gambling, alcohol, professionalism, respect and responsibility.

It’s a steep learning curve for the new recruits, but it’s a vital part of developing both as footballers and young men.

Second year players Jack Ziebell and Tyrone Vickery were invited along as guest speakers to give insight about their first 12 months in football, while Harry O’Brien was also there to provide some perspective.

At the end of the sessions, all players were officially registered as members of the AFLPA.

The St Kilda Football Club wishes Tommy, Nick, Will, Mark, Danny and the other 119 players who attended the best of luck throughout their career.
