ST KILDA is unwilling to part with its first-round draft pick, No.5 overall, to secure key defender Jake Carlisle in this year's trade period.
Carlisle nominated the Saints as his club of choice on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Thursday morning and Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro said the club would expect at least St Kilda's first-round selection as compensation for losing Carlisle.
But St Kilda counterpart Ameet Bains said his club would reject those demands, declaring the club's pick No.5 would not be put on the trade table in exchange for Carlisle.
"Not at this point in time," Bains told reporters outside Etihad Stadium.
"But there are a couple of weeks to come to an agreement on what the trade can look like.
"Getting a good player out of another club always presents its challenges. Essendon said it wants our pick No.5 – our expectations may be a bit different."
Dodoro said the Bombers would use the Patrick Ryder to Port Adelaide deal as precedent in the Carlisle trade.
The Power handed over their first and second round picks in last year's draft to lock away the ruckman.
"Last year we got a first and second round pick for Paddy Ryder. Jake's three or four years younger so we'd imagine that that's opening bids," Dodoro said.
"Unfortunately he wants to leave and we want to remunerated appropriately."

Bains later told NAB AFL Trade Radio that he was confident a deal would be reached despite the "initial stand-off".
"It's a difficult start if you've got one club saying that pick five is what they're after and you've got another saying they won't relinquish it, Bains said.
"It does mean that there's a bit of work to be done but in saying the trade period hasn't even started yet. We've got several open conversations going with other clubs, as I'm sure most clubs do, and we're confident that we'll be able to offer something else that will be fair and reasonable for Essendon.
"Given the initial stand-off we have with Essendon we're going to have to become more creative because we do acknowledge that he is a contracted Essendon player until either a trade gets done or until the end of the month. So it's incumbent on us to get a deal done."
Bains added the Saints were recruiting the 24-year-old to primarily play as a key defender.
