All the teams for Round 14 in the Smithy’s VFL.

SOUTHPORT’s premiership hopes have taken a serious hit with key forward Wylie Buzza ruled out for the season with an elbow injury ahead of the Sharks’ danger match against the GWS Giants at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

Buzza was in severe distress as he left the field shortly before half-time of the Sharks’ win over Carlton last week and the medical report hasn’t been favourable for the cult figure, with former captain Mike Manteit and Ryan Banks-Smith returning to replace him and Byron Finch.

The Giants regain Xavier O’Halloran and James Peatling from the AFL team, with Isaac Cumming heading in the other direction and Harry Rowston being rested.

Brisbane Lions Academy youngster Sam Marshall will play his first VFL game of the season when he lines up in their Jungle Kings clash against Coburg at Brighton Homes Arena.

Marshall, who is at school in Melbourne and playing for Sandringham Dragons, made his VFL debut last year at 16 and will be an interesting inclusion alongside Liston medallist Jarryd Lyons, who again finds himself out of the AFL team.

Shadeau Brain and Darcy Fort are also among the inclusions and Carter Michael makes his return from a long-term calf injury, while Coburg has put its faith in the 23 that last week broke a nine-year Battle of Bell Street drought against the Northern Bullants.

Gold Coast has four key inclusions for its first trip to Kinetic Stadium to take on Frankston, with key forward Levi Casboult, young gun Jake Rogers, the versatile Jy Farrar and the speedy Hewago Oea all returning, although Nick Holman and Darcy Macpherson have been promoted.

The Dolphins regain key forwards Noah Gown and Lachie Sharp from injury, while Kyle Stainthorpe has also earned a recall.

Northern Bullants’ loss to Coburg last week has had a disappointing postscript with Aaron Hilton and Sam Donegan succumbing to injury ahead of their game against Casey Demons at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday.

Hilton will miss six weeks with a wrist injury and Donegan hurt his hamstring, with scan results still to determine the severity.

But in better news, in-form forward Jack Chubb is back from injury alongside Dane Whitnall, the son of former Carlton star Lance, who suffered a series of injuries in his debut last month, while West Preston-Lakeside’s Felix Dreher is the latest mid-season signing to earn an Ants debut.

Casey regains AFL 199-gamer Lachie Hunter from a calf injury, with Blake Howes and last week’s Melbourne debutant Kynan Brown dropping back. Andy Moniz-Wakefield gets his own AFL bow, with Taj Woewodin also promoted and Will Verrall in concussion protocols.

Collingwood’s returning AFL cavalry has had a similar muscle-flex effect on the VFL, with Fin Macrae, Reef McInnes and Tew Jiath back from AFL duty, while Ed Allan and Ned Long also come back among eight changes that will also see a debut to Greensborough’s Angus Seivers, although cricket revert Wil Parker is out for at least a month with a knee injury.

The Magpies take on Essendon for the second time this season, with the Bombers making a sole change for the clash at Windy Hill – Nate Caddy back from an impressive AFL appearance to replace Jack Jedwab.

A series of big names are also back after the bye for Footscray as it aims to end a two-game skid against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval.

Caleb Daniel, Buku Khamis, James Harmes and Angus Scott have been dropped from the Western Bulldogs, Jordan Croft and Luke Cleary are out of concussion protocols and Nick Coffield returns from a long-term shoulder injury – and the Bulldogs also have a debutant in pacy small midfielder Diesel Moloney, who captained the Western Jets last season, with the promoted Oskar Baker being the only exclusion.

Sam Lowson has recovered from concussion for the Kangaroos and Louis Butler has overcome injury, with Dylan Stephens having been promoted and last year’s Casey best-and-fairest Deakyn Smith omitted.

Port Melbourne has regained stars Josh Green and Robbie McComb and named a son of a gun among two debutants for its clash with the Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval.

Kai Dimattina, 20, whose dad Paul played 131 AFL matches for the Western Bulldogs from 1995-2003, has broken in after a strong run of form for Old Brighton. He will share his first VFL game with Sam Allen, 22, also earning his chance after a three-goal best-afield effort for Park Orchards earlier this month.

But the Borough has again lost luckless Dan McKenzie, who will be in a race to play again this year with a calf injury, while fellow defender Jack Johnston (foot) and wingman Guy Barnes (hamstring) could also be out long-term.

Jack O’Sullivan and Cooper Stephens will make guarded returns from injury for the Hawks alongside Ethan Phillips.

Richmond will be boosted by midfielder Thomson Dow and forward Noah Cumberland returning from AFL duty for its history-busting clash with Carlton – the first time the teams have met at the Swinburne Centre in this competition for 128 years.

The Tigers have lost mid-season draftee Jacob Blight to an AFL debut and Sam Banks to a similar promotion, while youngsters Josh Pollocks (knee) and Ry Cantwell (finger) will miss about three weeks each with injury.

The Blues made one change, with Corey Durdin dropped from the AFL and Billy Wilson being rested after a minor knee issue last week.

Sydney and Werribee will both welcome back stars for their match at Tramway Oval on Sunday.

The Swans will see swingman Sam Reid return for the first time since Round 2 after a foot injury, with Ben Ashley-Cooper also returning to replace Peter Ladhams and Corey Warner, who have been rested out of precaution from previous injuries.

And the Tigers have a huge inclusion, with captain Nick Coughlan to play his first game since a Round 4 hamstring injury, while they have decided to play Kobe Annand alongside Sam Conway after the latter’s strong effort against Tom Downie last week.

Sandringham will head to GMHBA Stadium high on confidence with four key inclusions for its battle with a Geelong team on the rebound, with Zaine Cordy and Zak Jones dropped by St Kilda and Liam Stocker back from injury alongside Isaac Keeler.

But the Zebras have had to wrap their arms around defender Mitch Ryan, who is out for the year with a knee injury, while Josh Docking has an ankle problem and Cooper Sharman has gone up.

Lawson Humphries has earned an AFL call-up after a stunning debut season at VFL level for Geelong, with Shannon Neale and Mitch Knevitt also being promoted, while Terang-Mortlake forward Ryley Hutchins has earned his debut with 20 goals in 10 Hampden League games that has included eight selections in the best players.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast match is Richmond vs Carlton at ETU Stadium.
