Speaking on Perth radio station 6PR earlier this week, the former Power assistant coach denied rumours there was animosity between the pair.
“I lasted 10 years and there are not many people in the industry that last 10 years at the one club, so I have got no animosity towards Mark, he is a terrific guy and a terrific coach,” Walsh said.
“Port Adelaide are probably looking at making a change of direction. I had done as much as I could and it was probably time to give someone else a chance.”
“People don’t understand how hard the job is to be an AFL senior coach – it is an impossible job in my opinion, and Mark is one of the best.”
Walsh spent a decade at Alberton and was regarded as the mastermind behind Port Adelaide’s midfield during the 2004 Premiership year, where he was also acknowledged as the AFL’s assistant coach of the year.
Williams was also full of praise when reflecting on Walsh’s time at the Power.
“He’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met in football and has done a brilliant job developing our coaches and working with our players and has left a big impression at our club,” Williams said.
“For 10 years we had a very creative, intense and demanding relationship which reaped rewards for the football club.
“We thank Phil for his efforts at Alberton and wish him all the best for the future.”
