LANCE Franklin and Jarryd Roughead are out of Gold Coast's reach after extending their contracts with Hawthorn, while captain Sam Mitchell has also signed a new deal.

The club announced on Thursday that Franklin signed on for another three seasons, while Roughead has committed to the Hawks for another four.

The news is as much a blow for the AFL's expansion teams as it is a boon to Hawthorn.

Both had been seen as prime targets of Gold Coast - which is in pursuit of any hot talent coming out of contract at season's end.

But Franklin said he'd never harboured any desires to move on.

"No, I never even looked into it (leaving)," the 23-year-old said from Waverley.

"I was never leaving Hawthorn footy club, they've been great to me as a young kid when I first got here, so I was never going to go."

Roughead echoed his teammate and, despite the prospect of a bigger offer from Gold Coast, he joked the warmer weather would not have agreed with his fair complexion.

"[I'm] happy to stay here and I don't think I would have been any good up there with the sun," he said.

"Obviously Melbourne's winters just suited me fine."

Skipper Mitchell will also remain at the club until at least 2012 after extending his contract by two years - all but ensuring he will finish his career a one-club player.

"Mine's two years and if I get a kick in the two years they'll give me a third year, which will be nice," Mitchell said.

"[A] one-club player is what everyone wants to be."

The signatures come as a huge boost for the Hawks, who have lost their past five games, and 10 of their last 12.

It has been a steady drop of form and momentum for the club that surged to the 2008 premiership, but Roughead said the recent performances had done nothing to dent belief among the players, nor their desire to win another flag.

"There is a belief within our team that we can achieve further success if we remain a committed, stable and cohesive group," he said.

Coach Alastair Clarkson was hopeful the re-signings would provide a fillip for his team's on-field struggles.

"These three young men have shown great commitment to the club and a desire to build upon our past achievements," he said.

"The club is none too pleased with our current form, but this is another indication that we are all committed to putting things right."

Franklin and Roughead arrived at Hawthorn in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, with Roughead taken at No.2 and Franklin following at No.5.

Franklin has since played 106 games for the Hawks for a return of 317 goals. He enjoyed a breakout season in 2007 when he booted 73 goals, and backed it up with a Coleman Medal (113 goals) in Hawthorn's premiership year.

Roughead, 23, has kicked 197 goals in his 108 games, including a career-best 75 in 2008.

Mitchell, who turns 28 later this year, won the competition's rising star award in 2003, ahead of two Peter Crimmins Medals as the club's best and fairest player.
