GEELONG is negotiating to extend senior coach Chris Scott's contract until at least the end of 2019.

Cats CEO Brian Cook said Scott deserved an extension and he hoped the deal would be finalised "sooner rather than later".

Although Cook was not definitive on the length of the extension being negotiated, he said it would "probably [be] a couple of years".

"We just commenced negotiations in the last couple of weeks and we're getting close," Cook told SEN.

Scott has coached Geelong to 102 wins in his 142-game coaching career.

He led the Cats to a premiership in his first season as coach in 2011 and has averaged 17 wins a season in his six years during a period of enormous transition.

However the Cats have won just two of eight finals they have played since the 2011 flag.

Cook said the club preferred to extend coaches with a year remaining on their contract when possible as it created stability and gave players a sense of certainty when planning their careers.

"He deserves an extension. He has done his job very well," Cook said.
