Three rookies are in line to play their first game for Fremantle in Sunday’s round one Starlight Purple Haze clash with Adelaide at Subiaco Oval.

Mature-agers Michael Barlow and Alex Silvagni, and the club’s top draft pick Anthony Morabito have all been named in the squad of 25.

Jay van Berlo, who was elevated from the club’s rookie list on Thursday along with Silvagni, has also been selected after an impressive pre-season.

Livewire forward Hayden Ballantyne has been named after missing two weeks with a knee injury, while Steven Dodd has made a quicker than expected recovery from shoulder and wrist surgery.

Barlow, 22, has had a meteoric rise to AFL level after playing VFL for the past few seasons.

The former Werribee Tiger won the Fothergill-Round Medal as the best young player in the VFL in 2009, before being picked up by Fremantle in the 2009 AFL Rookie Draft.

After an excellent pre-season for Fremantle, in which he played all four games, Barlow was recently selected to be the club’s nominated rookie for season 2010.

He will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of 2009 mature-age success story Greg Broughton and consolidate his spot in the Fremantle team.

Silvagni, 22, has also been rewarded for a strong pre-season where he played as a key defender.

The former Casey Scorpion performed well when given some tough assignments during the NAB Cup/Challenge series.

Morabito, 18, was the club’s first selection (fourth overall) in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, and brings with him explosive pace and athleticism.

A Peel Thunder product, Morabito starred for Western Australia at the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, gaining All-Australian honours.

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said the side would more than likely unveil some new faces on Sunday.

“You can expect debutants to play,” Harvey said. “We’re probably...at this stage looking at some of our rookies.”

Harvey said balancing the blooding of rookies with senior players returning from injury would be a challenge this season.

“But it’s good that you’ve got a list where the rookies are putting pressure on selection,” he said.

Harvey said that the result of Fremantle’s last encounter with Adelaide would bear no influence on Sunday’s outcome.

“The personnel has changed enormously and after a different pre-season the players are a lot more mature and stronger,” he said. “So a lot of things change.”
