CARLTON coach Brett Ratten said Saturday's win against Adelaide could prove to be a turning point in the Blues' season after they beat a wasteful Crows outfit by 48 points at AAMI stadium.

Carlton has suffered disappointing losses to the Brisbane Lions and Essendon this season after being in commanding positions at times in both matches.

But Ratten said it was his players' ability to maintain the momentum at key points in the game against the Crows, as well as their improved mental and physical toughness, that proved crucial.

"[During the week] we worked on what to do when the momentum is against us and what the players can do to respond to that," he said.

"When it came time for the players to deliver I thought they put in a fantastic effort when it came time for them to put their head over the ball and win some of those 50/50 contests."

Chris Judd's return from suspension was critical for Carlton.

The Blues captain collected 30 touches and kicked a goal in his first match of the season, and Ratten was impressed with the influence that he was able to exert on the game.

"I thought for a good part of the game he helped the team and got us going in the second quarter," Ratten said.

"He's a professional, and the way he goes about his footy he makes sure he wins every ball and kicks every goal. The way he's come back and had an influence on the team, and I thought for him to play that way and lead the team from the front, was really encouraging knowing that he'll get better each week."
