During the September school holidays the Tigers in the Community Foundation (TICF), through the Federal Healthy Active Australia program, took 26 primary aged children from the high-rise Collingwood Housing Estate for a three-day getaway at Camp Angahook just outside Aireys Inlet.

The program, named ‘Bridging the G.A.P’, (Good nutrition, Active lifestyles and Positive futures) was a huge success and saw children from a wide range of cultural backgrounds (Sudanese, Chinese, Anglo, Indigenous, and Maori) come together.

The kids participated in archery, low ropes, bush hut building, orienteering, initiative courses, a trip to the beach and historic lighthouse, campfires and bushwalking.

Many of these children had never been out of Melbourne before, much less been away from their parents.

One participant, Khan (9) said: “My favourite bit was the Archery, I never got a bulls-eye but did get some close, and I also liked the food.”

Many thanks go to the staff of the local Collingwood after school program Livewires, who came along and were a great help.

The TICF have supported children and young people from the Collingwood housing Estate for almost 4 years now and the Bridging the G.A.P program will run every school holidays until September 2009 for three days per week.
