DEVELOPING Essendon ruckman Tom Bellchambers might have played down his role in his side's 52-point victory over St Kilda on Sunday, but nobody can deny the 201cm ruckman's influence since stepping in to fill injured teammate David Hille's shoes.

Against Sydney last week the 21-year-old ruckman picked up only seven disposals but dominated with 31 hit-outs. Against the Saints, Bellchambers backed up his performance with 12 possessions, 41 hit-outs and a goal.

Though keen to deflect the attention to his side's impressive form, Bellchambers acknowledged he was pleased to be making the most of his chances in Hille's absence with a hip injury.

"It's good to get the opportunity at senior level, and obviously there's still a lot of improvement there for me, but every time I step out there I'm learning and it's a good experience," Bellchambers told afl.com.au.

"I work pretty closely with 'Hilley' and he's obviously one of the best ruckmen in the league so I have someone really experienced to learn off, which is good."

Bellchambers said coach James Hird told the players after the game he was impressed by the group's ability to come back from last week's loss and improve in a short space of time.

"The boys understood what we did in the first game and we went away from that last week, but it was a credit to the guys that we put in a four-quarter effort tonight," he said.

"He (Hird) was really happy with the improvement of everyone and the four-quarter effort was obviously a big factor in the game. We knew if we were with them at quarter-time we could really run over them and that's what happened."

With only 16 AFL games under his belt, Bellchambers is just one of a number of young Bombers to make an impact when brought into the side.

He continues to develop his tap work and has become more adept at stoppages, while his agility and strong marking around the ground has developed since making his debut in 2008.

With the Bombers set to face Carlton next week at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, Bellchambers said he wasn't sure if the side could fit three ruckman but that the club was excited about the game.

"We're really happy. All the boys played their role tonight and it's an improvement on last week, and now we're looking forward to next week and facing Carlton," he said.

"I'm not too sure (about playing if Hille returns), but it's always a big game against them and we'll need to bring our A-game."
