All the teams for Round 21 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Box Hill Hawks’ premiership hopes have copped a crippling double blow with Tyler Brown and Ben Cavarra unlikely to play again this season ahead of their Round 21 Smithy’s VFL match of the round against Werribee on Sunday.

Brown suffered an achilles injury in the Hawks’ last game against the GWS Giants and Cavarra is out for at least five weeks with a hamstring, meaning they will have to make at least the preliminary final to see him again.

Needing to win to guarantee their spot in the top four, Box Hill has also lost Cam Mackenzie (Hawthorn), Bailey Macdonald (ankle) and Chad Wingard (managed), with AFL National Academy member Christian Moraes to make his VFL debut.

The Tigers, who must win themselves to secure the minor premiership, have also been hit by injury, with Angus Hicks (hamstring) and Stefan Radovanovic (wrist) out for a month and Daly Andrews also hurt, but Sam Paea is back from his long-term shoulder problem and Jack Riding, Jay Rantall and Jake Smith return as well.

Carlton’s AFL injury woes have been well documented this week, but it is Richmond, crippled by bad luck all season, which has had to make the most changes ahead of its do-or-die game at IKON Park on Sunday.

The Tigers have made eight changes to the team that lost to Sandringham last week, with another potential top 10 pick on trial in Harvey Langford, who makes his VFL debut as fellow draft hopefuls in Jagga Smith and Finn O’Sullivan return to the Oakleigh Chargers.

Richmond loses Jacob Blight, Jack Ross and Matt Coulthard to the AFL, Joel Garner to suspension and Cam Olden to a hamstring injury, with Marlion Pickett, Thomson Dow, Kane McAuliffe, Samson Ryan and Kaleb Smith all returning to the line-up.

By contrast, the Blues will be without AFL debutants Cooper Lord and Ashton Moir, plus Jaxon Binns and Corey Durdin, with St Mary’s’ Michael Rudd and Rowville’s Callum Verrell to play their first games.

Out-of-favour Gold Coast star Jack Lukosius has been named to play only his second VFL game and his first since 2022 when the Suns take on Casey Demons at People First Stadium on Saturday.

The Suns need to win comfortably and hope Southport loses to pinch sixth spot off the Sharks, and they will give themselves the best chance with Alex Sexton, Lloyd Johnson, Jy Farrar and boom youngster Ethan Read all set to play in the early game, although club stalwart Sam Day will miss through injury.

The Demons will be without promoted trio Marty Hore, Jack Billings and Adam Tomlinson and the injured Ollie Sestan, but Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Taj Woewodin and Harvey Neocleous are among the inclusions.

Essendon will get a look at two potential draft recruits when it winds up its season against Coburg at Piranha Park on Sunday.

The Bombers have named father-son prospect Noah Caracella, the son of former star forward and VFL coach Blake, while NGA prospect and Calder Cannons vice-captain Jayden Nguyen will also don the sash for the first time alongside returning stars Will Setterfield and Alwyn Davey.

Archie Perkins, Sam Weideman (both AFL) and Vigo Visentini (suspension) go out of the team alongside the in-form Matt Foley, who has dropped back to play with EDFL finals aspirant Strathmore.

Strathmore will also have the services of star Coburg ruckman Cooper Keogh, with his Lions’ spot taken by Will Bella, while Max Kennedy returns from a hand injury to regain the role filled by his little brother Luke last week and Tom McKenzie also returns.

Williamstown’s soft tissue curse has struck again, with Noah Gadsby ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, while Joel Fitzgerald and Zac Pritchard will miss Saturday’s DSV Stadium clash against GWS for the same reason.

The Seagulls are up to 19 soft tissue leg injuries this season, but they regain skipper Cam Polson from his latest issue, while Ryley Stoddart (ribs) also returns and there is a debut for highly-rated Western Jets tall Lucas Impey, the latest to come out of the Darley footy factory.

The Giants regain Xavier O’Halloran but will bring an undermanned team to Melbourne, losing the promoted Conor Stone and injured Jacob Wehr and Marc Sheather, with Shepparton teenager Ned Byrne called up for his debut.

Sandringham’s hopes of making the finals will be known by half-time of its clash with Geelong, but it will still want to complete an undefeated season at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

The Zebras regain Max Heath from injury and St Kilda pair Ben Paton and Angus McLennan, while there is a debut for Port Melbourne Colts and Dragons key defender Lachlan Voss. Hugo Garcia forced his way back into the Saints’ team with his irresistible game last week.

The Cats regain Brandan Parfitt, Jed Bews, Oli Wiltshire and Joe Pike, with Mitch Knevitt promoted and Ted Clohesy concussed.

Sydney’s finals hopes have copped a blow with emerging young key defender Will Edwards suffering a broken leg in last week’s win over Collingwood, which coupled with Sam Wicks’ four-week suspension and Corey Warner’s call-up to cover for brother Chad will leave it undermanned.

The Swans must beat minor premiership-chasing Footscray at Tramway Oval to stay alive, with the Bulldogs recalling Riley Garcia, Anthony Scott and Nick Coffield but losing Jack Macrae, Harvey Gallagher and James O’Donnell to the AFL team, while Trent Bianco is also sidelined.

VAFA star Christian Algeri will make his VFL debut for a depleted Collingwood when it meets the Brisbane Lions at AIA Vitality Centre on Saturday.

The 21-year-old midfielder has kicked 17 goals in 15 games for De La Salle and represented the league against Bendigo last month, earning his chance alongside Balwyn youngster Isaiah Markovsky.

Joe Richards has also been named by the Magpies, with experienced defender Kaiden Schreiber and mid-season draftee Iliro Smit back in the team, replacing the promoted Wil Parker, injured pair Harvey Harrison and Ash Johnson and VFL great Tom Wilson.

The Lions regain Henry Smith after his debut AFL stint, with Harry Sharp going in the other direction and wunderkind Levi Ashcroft returning to Sandringham Dragons.

Port Melbourne has lost star midfielder Josh Green and ruckman Felix Flockart for its 150th season-closer against Northern Bullants at ETU Stadium on Saturday, which doubles as Billy Gowers’ 100th VFL game and the farewell for coach Adam Skrobalak.

Cam Wild and Tom Hofert replace that pair, with ex-Bullant Spencer Johnson also recalled, while the Ants have named North Heidelberg teenager Zane Anderson to debut alongside Isaac Barry and Lucas Edmonds, losing Christos Kosmas to injury.

Gowers is at his fourth VFL club, having previously lined up for Northern Blues, Footscray and Southport for two years apiece and enters the game as an equal leader in the Frosty Miller Medal with the chance to set a target for Carlton’s Liam McMahon and Werribee’s Hudson Garoni, who play on Sunday.

It’s a defender for a forward at Southport, with key defender Rhys Clark returning from injury for the ill Wylie Buzza, the hero of the win over Werribee a fortnight ago that looks to have wrapped up the Sharks’ top six spot.

The Sharks have Mike Manteit playing his 150th State league game against North Melbourne, who have named Jaidyn Stephenson and Will Phillips to replace Miller Bergman and Kallan Dawson.

Manteit played 69 NEAFL matches for Sydney Uni, Southport and Sydney and this will be his 81st VFL game for the Sharks and Collingwood.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast match will be Sandringham vs Geelong Cats.
