Sandringham Coach Andy Lovell gives his Round 14 update on the performance and development of the Melbourne listed VFL players, following disappointing losses by the senior and reserve teams.

Round 14 VFL Seniors
Sandringham 2.3 - 7.8 - 10.10 - 15.15-105
Williamstown 10.2 - 13.3 - 15.6 - 19.10-124

Ricky Petterd
Stats:
Possessions 25, Kicks 12, Handballs 13,
Ricky played primarily off half back, and was matched up on the Bulldogs' listed Callum Ward. He had a really good game defensively, and kept his opponent pretty quiet. He finished with 25 possessions and used the ball well, but turned it over on occasions off one step kicks. He did attack the game, and gave us some good run off half back. For small parts of the game, we put him into the midfield and he did well getting his hands on the ball at stoppages. Overall, Ricky just had a really good game. He is back to playing around 80% of game time, and is on track for where we want his body to be.

Jeff White
Stats: Possessions 23, Kicks 14, Handballs 9, Marks 9,
Whitey had a really good duel with Peter Street in the ruck, and probably broke even with him. He got plenty of the ball, with 23 possessions, nine marks and a goal - which is a good effort. We thought he rucked well at stoppages, and played with a lot of energy. His leadership and attitude towards the game was again really good.

Adem Yze
Stats:
Possessions 21, Kicks 14, Handballs 7, Tackles 12, Goals 3
Adem was very good for us - he had 21 possessions and 17 ‘one percenters’, including 12 tackles. His attitude and leadership was outstanding. He played midfield/half forward and had a really good balance between his attack and defensive parts of his game. He kicked the ball really well in the windy conditions, and finished with three goals. Adem’s defensive pressure was a highlight, and he and Biddlecombe were in the top two players for us on the day.

Addam Maric

Stats: Possessions 21, Kicks 17, Handballs 4, Marks 7, Goals 1,
Addam’s workrate was much better. He played midfield/forward and got his hands on the ball with 21 touches. He probably didn’t capitalize fully on his opportunities in front of goal - he kicked three goals three behinds, where he could have easily kicked five goals. He looked dangerous and was lively around the contests. He also showed good balance in his game, and was a lot better with his defensive pressure.

Aaron Davey
Stats:
Possessions 20, Kicks 14, Handballs 6, Tackles 8, Goals 1
Aaron played as a midfielder, and up forward. He spread really well from the stoppages, and used his pace to run and link up through the middle of the ground. In the third quarter, Davey was the one who got us going with his run and handball receives out of stoppages. His attitude following the suspension and coming back down to Sandringham was great.

John Meesen
Stats:
Possessions 15, Kicks 10, Handballs 5, Marks 5
John played his best game for about a month, and he was especially good in the second half.  He played in the ruck and on the wing. It was pleasing that he used his running ability to get possessions around the ground – collecting 15 for the game. He still has a lot of improvement to achieve in his ruck work.  He got caught behind Peter Street and wasn’t as effective as we would have liked in this area.

Nathan Carroll
Stats: Possessions 15, Kicks 7, Handballs 8, Goals 1
Nathan struggled down back in the first quarter, and gave away a 50 metre penalty, which resulted in a goal. He looked flat and reactive, but after quarter time his intensity and workrate really lifted. W e rotated him between centre half forward and half back for the last three quarters, and he played a really good role for us. His defensive pressure as a forward was really good – some of his chasing and tackling set up a couple of goals for us, which was also pleasing.

Jace Bode
Stats: Possessions 13, Kicks 6, Handballs 7
Jace struggled a bit, and didn’t have the impact on the game that we expect of him. He played loose on his man in the first quarter, and didn’t get involved on the offence end.  After quarter time he tightened up and his work ethic improved, but overall it wasn’t one of his better games.

James Frawley
Stats: Possessions 11, Kicks 3, Handballs 8,
James played as a tall defender, and was solid for us in defence.  He had a really good game the week before against Ballarat, but this week he just looked little reactive and lost his man a few times. He didn’t appear to have the same confidence and assertiveness in his game that we’re used to.  The effort for James was still good, but he just didn’t get the ball in his hands enough to have a real impact on the game.

VFL Reserves
Sandringham 2.2 - 2.2 - 4.7 - 4.10-34
Williamstown 4.2 - 11.7 - 14.11 - 19.15-129

Isaac Weetra
Stats:
Possessions 19, Kicks 5, Handballs 14, Tackles 3, Goals 1
Isaac played at half forward, and his work rate was a lot better. He got involved in the game and attacked the footy, showing much more urgency then he has in the past. He had 19 possessions, backed himself in, and used good judgement. This was a much improved game for Isaac.

Tom McNamara
Stats:
Possessions 19, Kicks 14, Handballs 5, Marks 6,
Tom’s offensive game was good.  He used the ball well, and continued to make good decisions. He played on ex AFL player, Callum Urch, and probably got beaten defensively on the day. Tom is a young player who is working really hard on the defensive side of his game. He is coming to terms with the intensity and work ethic that is required to become a reliable defender at VFL/AFL level.

Jake Spencer
Stats: Possessions 12, Kicks 3 , Handballs 9, Marks 6, Tackles 4
Jake’s efforts were up on last week. Playing in the ruck, he got 12 possessions and took six marks. His running patterns were much better, and he got himself in good positions to mark the ball, as well as showing real speed. It was a much better effort from him, he has been working hard on getting more of the football and he was able to do that, which was pleasing.

Jack Grimes
Stats:
Possessions 10, Kicks 6, Handballs 4, Tackles 4,
Jack’s form dipped a little bit. He didn’t get a lot of the ball, collecting 10 possessions for the day, but his work ethic was still good. He did look a bit lethargic, which is pretty natural for a player coming back from injury. He’s got all the attributes of a great player – he showed great courage backing back into a pack, and never took his eyes off the ball. This set a terrific example for his teammates for the rest of the day. Jack played about 70% of game time, and continues to pull up well following his games.

Trent Zomer
Stats: Kicks 3 , Marks 1, Tackles 2 Possessions 3
Trent really struggled. He had just come off a pretty bad illness and he only played about 50% of game time. He lacked energy and urgency, and was obviously still affected by the illness.
