MELBOURNE ruckman Max Gawn looks to have avoided a second knee reconstruction but is still set to undergo surgery on his right knee after scans revealed a torn medial meniscus.

The 19-year-old was sent for investigation on Thursday morning after injuring his knee during training at Casey Fields on Wednesday.

The worst had been feared by the Demons, given Gawn underwent a reconstruction on his right knee when he arrived at the club in late 2009.

He now faces another operation on the knee and the club is yet to determine exactly how long he will be sidelined.

"The full extent of the injury, including how much football Max will miss, will be determined after he has been operated on and further investigation has been completed by the surgeon in the operating theatre," a statement released by the club said.

The 208cm giant made his AFL debut in round 11 this year against Essendon after being named as emergency for three straight weeks, and played four senior games for the season.

Gawn was drafted with selection No.34 overall in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.
