The Kangaroos and Sustainability Victoria have teamed up for a special ‘green round’ and will show their commitment to reducing the effects of climate change.
Each North player will wear fluorescent green shoelaces during the match at Etihad Stadium to highlight the need for everyone, including footy fans, to be more environmentally conscious and play their part when it comes to tackling climate change.
“We are encouraging all our supporters and the wider AFL community to get behind this initiative and really think about the impact they have on the environment and ways in which they can reduce that impact,” North chief executive Eugene Arocca said.
“When supporters leave the footy after the final siren they can play an immediate role and start looking after the environment by catching the train home, using the appropriate bins around the ground to dispose of their rubbish and recycle.”
Supporters of both teams will also be asked to consider further sustainable practices, such as making the switch to GreenPower, recycling household waste and using energy and water efficient appliances.
Arocca says the club’s commitment to the environment also involved several environmentally friendly innovations at the new Arden Street training and administrative complex.
“We gave a tremendous amount of consideration to the environment during the construction of our new facility. Our structure is North facing with energy saving and motion detecting lighting, it has rainwater tanks, a grey water system and solar panels,” Arocca added.
As part of the initiative, Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Gavin Jennings will toss the coin at the beginning of the match.
