GOLD Coast skipper Gary Ablett has apologised to Geelong fans after being ruled out of Saturday's clash against his former side at Skilled Stadium.

"Apologies to all the Cats fans! I was really looking forward to playing down at Skilled Stadium. It was a hamstring injury I hurt against Collingwood and it felt good leading into the St Kilda game but unfortunately I've done a bit more damage," Ablett tweeted on Wednesday morning.

"Hoping to be right for the last four games of the season!"

Ablett was due to make his first appearance at Skilled Stadium since leaving Geelong in the off-season, but Suns coach Guy McKenna said he would not risk his superstar.

"There's just been a bit of bleeding into his hamstring. Bit like our theory with the young kids, the old ones you've got to treat them much the same, if there's any doubt, rule them out," McKenna said.

"I'd prefer him to miss a week rather than a month.

"It's a shame, he's disappointed of course, he would love to have got down there and faced his old mob."

McKenna said he expected Ablett to miss just one week.
