BRETT Deledio says the Tigers are rapt to be "back where we belong" in the opening game of the premiership season against Carlton at the MCG.

The unavailability of the ground early last season meant the home-and-away calendar kicked off with Collingwood-Fremantle at Etihad Stadium.

But this year the Richmond-Carlton match has been restored as the first on the fixture and the Tigers' vice-captain says that's the way it should be. 

"It's a big game and we're lucky here at the Tigers – our supporters come out rain, hail or shine and get to play in some pretty big games," Deledio said on Tuesday.

"We're back to where we belong, I think, in round one at the 'G versus Carlton."

Deledio's pre-season has again been marred by the Achilles soreness that has plagued him on and off for around four years.

He said he would train less this season in a bid to give himself the best chance of playing every game.

"I certainly would like to play them all, I always have," he said.

"Our fitness staff and medical staff have been really good and held me back at the right times and just put a plan in place to make sure I can not only get through this season but play on for many more years to come."

Deledio expects to again play mainly forward this season, with cameos onball, in a similar role to those Shane Edwards, Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and elevated rookie Kane Lambert will fill.

He said Lambert, who has impressed in the pre-season after being drafted from the VFL, was a big chance to face the Blues.

"He's certainly put his hand up and I'm glad I'm not in the position of the match committee," he said.

"He's an outstanding kid, doesn't say too much and just lets his footy do the talking for him.

"It's the same story with most kids these days when they come in, it's heads down, bum up and they just do the hard work."
