NEW BRISBANE Lions’ coach Michael Voss has cut his links with sports management company Velocity Sports in order to avoid any potential conflicts of interest with his new role at the helm of the club.

Voss told Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper that he had transferred his shareholding in the company, relinquishing his role as director.

“I’m legally separating myself from that, as we speak,” Voss said.

“If I am going to be a coach, I can’t be involved with a sports management company. It clearly can’t happen. That is a byproduct of the situation and I understand that.”

Lions’ players Jonathan Brown and Simon Black are two of at least nine players from the club managed by the company. Other high-profile clients include Brendan Fevola, Travis Cloke and Heath Shaw.

Voss admitted to some frustration in relinquishing the role as he had devoted two years to developing the role, but said his coaching duties would always come first.

"There are other things you have to factor in when you are making a decision like that… the other thing is with this is that I have to make sure my intensity for work in now always towards the Brisbane Lions. You can’t have distractions that can be avoidable.”

It’s not the first difficult decision that the Brownlow medalist has had to make since taking over from Leigh Matthews. In an overhaul of the footy department, Voss sacked his former team mate Marcus Ashcroft from the Lions’ coaching staff.

“It was very, very hard; letting people go always is. It’s never an ideal situation," Voss said.

"You just have to make sure that you have the right intentions, and I was keen to let people know as early as I could and that took a week to establish the future direction.”
