ST KILDA made contact with the umpiring department this week after some contentious final-quarter decisions in its three-point loss to Hawthorn, Saints coach Alan Richardson has confirmed.

Play-on was called after a couple of kicks deep in defence were deemed to not have travelled 15m, and Hawk Jordan Lewis kicked a goal from a turnover soon after one of those decisions.

"The umpires after the game acknowledged they didn't get a couple of those right. That was costly," Richardson said on Friday.

"(Football manager) Jamie Cox made contact with the umpires, just to make sure we're all on the same page.

"We're pretty comfortable with where that sits."

AFL head umpires coach Hayden Kennedy told AFL.com.au the second decision was incorrect, when Sean Dempster kicked to Shane Savage.

"I think the second one sneaks over 15 (metres). It's probably 16 or 17 or thereabouts," Kennedy said.

"I'm not too sure about the first one as to whether it's 15 or not."

Meanwhile, midfielder Luke Dunstan and defender Jimmy Webster are likely to return after missing the Hawks match.

Dunstan had been dealing with a hamstring injury while it was a quadriceps issue for Webster.

Richardson said both are fit to play GWS this Sunday afternoon at Etihad Stadium.

"Initially it was looking like both guys would be (out for) a couple of weeks but the medical team have done a really good job," he said.

"My expectation is they will be right to go."

Turnovers have been a problem for the Saints and Richardson conceded as much.

St Kilda is ranked 17th for points conceded from turnovers.

Sam Fisher, Leigh Montagna and Jack Newnes are the major culprits – each has given up 26 points from their turnovers.

"It's been an issue in all of our performances," Richardson said.

"(The turnovers happen) way too close to our goal.

"We need to get better, but having said all of that, we're still going to be really aggressive with the way we move the footy.

"We'll do some slight tinkering but not much."
