Goddard and the other members of the Bombers' leadership group, which is headed by skipper Jobe Watson, met on Wednesday to discuss the dramas surrounding Hird.
The gathering of key players was held prior to the much-publicised board meeting, at which Essendon's directors voted to honour Hird's contract for the 2015 and '16 seasons.
"We met … and had a discussion about it," Goddard said. "I think it's important we did and talked about how the players were feeling.
"Generally we were feeling pretty good, but it was more that we don't need or want any more distractions.
"Although we've dealt with a lot in the past, I think … from the footy club's perspective, and the players, I think it would be good if it was somewhat forgotten about and we move on from it."
The message from the players to Hird was reportedly delivered during Wednesday's board meeting.
"I think the message has been passed on to Hirdy," Goddard said.
"He's across how the players are feeling and he's welcomed the feedback.
"He's ready to move on."
