WHITELION participants drew inspiration from former Power player and current Player Welfare and Development Manager Stuart Cochrane at Alberton recently.

Cochrane, a former Whitelion Sports Role Model shared tips and experiences as he took young people from Whitelion’s ‘Get Up & Go’ and ‘Sail for Success’ programs through their paces at Alberton Oval on Thursday 26th August.

Tony and Ben, Project Managers from Grocon, were also present to join in and talk to the young people about job opportunities in the construction industry.

Whitelion is a not-for-profit organisation that builds meaningful relationships and creates opportunities that enable highly vulnerable and high risk young people to reconnect with society and reach their full potential.

The boys had a great time on Thursday at Alberton and Stuart did a great job of facilitating the morning that included a tour and skills session.

Whitelion’s ‘Get up and Go’ program offers students who are becoming disengaged from formal education the chance to participate in a regular, group sporting activity. The objective of the program is to provide practical support and is an incentive to students with the hope that they will maintain their attendance and achieve their high school certification.

For those who do not wish to continue formal education the priority will be life skills, self-esteem improvement and employability skills such as even the simple fact of achieving a level of health and fitness which enables the early-rising required to “get up and go” to work.

Whitelion and SA Tall Ships are working together on the ‘Sail for Success’ project, where young people who have been involved with state care and the youth justice system take an active part in a voyage on the training vessel “One and All”.

The aim is to provide young people with nationally-accredited training and secure jobs not only in the sea-faring and marine diesel/engineering industries, but also in hospitality, environmental protection, offshore employment and the aquaculture and seafood industries. In addition, the program provides the young people with important life skills such as team-work, problem-solving and conflict resolution.
