FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon says he's been "in bigger holes than this" after the Dockers slumped to 0-2 for the first time during his tenure.

The Dockers lost to Gold Coast by 26 points at Domain Stadium on Saturday night to set a number of unwanted records for the club.  

They have not lost the opening two games of a season since 2009, and Lyon has never lost the opening two games of a season in his 10-year AFL coaching career.

St Kilda had a loss and a draw to begin 2011, but the Saints still played finals in his last season at the club.

Lyon said despite the horror start, neither he nor his team will be intimidated by the situation. 

"We're 0-2, I've been in bigger holes than this," Lyon said post-match.

"We'll work through. We won't be intimidated into to what other people think. That's not the way we roll."

The Dockers' defensive woes are what alarmed Lyon the most. His side conceded 100 points for the second consecutive week, something that hasn’t  happened since his first season in charge in 2012.

Lyon said the Suns' ability to score with ease from the centre bounce was the most concerning aspect of the loss.

"The centre-square bounce, our ability to defend it out of there," he said.

"We've changed our system. I think we'll have a good at it. Two weeks in a row, it probably doesn't suit our lack of leg speed so we'll have a good look at that.

“They have kicked 6.1 out of the middle, (I) think we have averaged 1.1 in the last four years. They kicked four (goals) in the first half from five entries.

"We'll look at what the defenders are doing and the midfield is doing, so that's not pretty viewing." 

The Dockers also kicked at 56 per cent efficiency throughout the match, which caused a high number of costly turnovers, but Lyon said he wouldn't chastise his players for their skill errors.

"There was some terrible decision and skill execution, wasn't there," Lyon said.

"But I'm not going to hang people - they don't try to miss targets. It's a little bit of decision making, trying to be too cute under pressure."

Lyon said the high scoring against his side and the high scoring trends across the competition had little to do with any rule changes. 

"There's only one rule that's changed," Lyon said.

"That's guarding the mark. I had some input into it anyway.

"If anything it's the attitude to try and catch Hawthorn and everyone is trying to score more and open it up more. I think that's the reality of it.

"But we acknowledge Hawthorn have been the best kicking team probably in the history of the game.

"So therefore if you try and play like that and you can't kick and you can't retain it, well you need to be quick. And if you're not quick and you can't kick well, it puts you under pressure."

Lyon said there were some positives to come out of the loss. He was pleased with the new ruck combination of Aaron Sandilands and Alex Pearce. He also was pleased that his side kicked 100 points.

But the challenge does not get any easier for the Dockers as they face West Coast next Saturday night.
