Carr, 28, played 105 games and won a premiership with the Power before seeking a trade across the Nullarbor to be closer to his family.
But the West Australian, who was delisted by Fremantle on Friday, has had another change of heart and has relocated back to Adelaide, where he plans to resume his career with the Power.
Port Adelaide assistant coach Adam Kingsley said he was happy to see his former teammate back in the black, white and teal.
“Josh came out and trained with us this morning. He looks pretty good. His kicking was quite good and it looks like he’s done a bit of work,” Kingsley told Network 10.
“It’s good to have him back and hopefully we get him in the pre-season draft.”
Port Adelaide received picks 11, 27 and 45 as compensation for Carr in 2004, but Fremantle appears to be resigned to losing the former vice-captain for nothing.
The Power weren’t willing to trade for the tough nut during the exchange period.
Instead, the club will take its chances on snaring him with pick four in the December 16 NAB AFL Pre-season Draft.
Carr’s presence and leadership would be a welcomed addition to the young Power playing group, who recently announced it would disband the unsuccessful leadership program employed in season 2008.
“Josh is a player that everyone loves,” Kingsley said.
“His style of game is something that really helped us back when he was playing for us, and if we can get him I think it will certainly help us again in the next few years.”
