The first report on Heath Shaw’s progress in Arizona highlights the premiership Magpie’s desire to get back in the best 22 for week one of finals, the first match he is eligible to play in.

Shaw, 25, flew over to the United States last Sunday and has been thriving in the hot and humid conditions of the Arizona desert.

Collingwood’s sports science director David Buttifant has revealed on CTV’s Thursday night show, In Black and White Tonight, that the suspended player is on no holiday during the two-week campaign.

“Heath went over on Sunday (and) I have spoken to him twice now,” Buttifant declared in the ‘On Track’ feature of the show.

“He arrived in Phoenix and fortunately the weather was pretty ordinary, it was 41 degrees Celsius.

“It is certainly no picnic over there and Heath is working extremely hard at the minute.”

Also on the show, special guest Alan Toovey indicated he will be available for selection next week, after recovering from finger surgery which saw him sidelined since round 18.

“The finger has come along pretty well,” Toovey said.

“The surgeon is happy with the progress I have made.

“I have been training in the last couple of sessions and it looks like I will be back next week.”
