The Hawks Museum have a new addition to the Stairway of Memories, with the scoreboard that graced the railway-wing fence at Glenferrie now on display.
The latest historically significant item displays the final score from the last home and away game played at Glenferrie at the end season 1973, which saw 9,932 fans in attendance.
The match was played against South Melbourne with the Hawks winning with a score of 16.20.116 to the Swans 11.13.79.
Goal scorers for the Hawks included Michael Moncrieff (six), Leigh Matthews (three), Alan Goad (two), Peter Crimmins (one), David Parkin (one), Ian Bremner (one) and Charlie Grummisch (one).
From 1974, Hawthorn home games were played at Princes Park with the Club retaining its administration and training base at Glenferrie.
In 1990, the Hawks decided to leave Princes Park, playing at a number of home grounds both at Princes Park and Waverley Park in 1990 and 1991.
By 1992 all home games were played at Waverley.
The AFL made the decision to close Waverley Park at the end of 1999 with the new stadium being built at Docklands to take its place.
In a quirk of history, Hawthorn’s last home and away game at Waverley was again against the Swans in 1999.
In front of a huge crowd of 72,130 the Hawks won 23.15.153 to Sydney 11.2.68, with the major goal kickers for the Hawks Thompson (six), Nick Holland (five) and Daniel Harford (three).
Since 2000 the Hawks have played their home games at the MCG or at Aurora Stadium in Launceston, moving it’s training base and offices to Waverley Park in 2006 after 100 years at Glenferrie.
