The Swans will take much more than four points out of Sunday’s thrilling five-point win over Essendon at ANZ Stadium.

With their opening two matches of the 2011 season decided by less than a goal, some media outlets have labelled the team the ‘cardiac kids’, but forward Ben McGlynn says the team will take some confidence from their first win under coach John Longmire.

“It gives us a bit of belief in the game plan, that it can stand up under pressure. Essendon scored pretty easily and got a good lead there, but it was great for the boys to fight back and to stick to the game plan and get over the line,” McGlynn said.

“Essendon have been the form side of the summer and West Coast have won their last two as well and they are up and running. It’s going to be a tough task going over there to the west but the boys are looking forward to it,” he said.

With spearhead Daniel Bradshaw sidelined with injury, the Swans have had to find new avenues to goal early in the season and McGlynn and Jude Bolton have led the way.

Both players matched their three goal performances in round one, with another three against the Bombers.

“All of the good teams in the competition have multiple goal kickers - I think Collingwood had 13 or so the other week - so you can’t really rely on one or two people up forward, we need to really share the load amongst the midfielders and the forwards,” McGlynn explained.

“Yesterday we saw Sam Reid be a good target for us and also Jesse White, so they’re two blokes who can also kick goals, so there is positive signs up forward and hopefully we can share the load,” he said.

The Swans will travel to Perth on Wednesday in preparation for Saturday evening’s match against the Eagles at Patersons Stadium.
