DESPITE the off-field turmoil that has engulfed the club in recent days, North Melbourne's Liam Anthony says he and his teammates have no doubt they can make the finals this year.

Anthony will play his first game since round seven last season when North Melbourne takes on Geelong and the Western Bulldogs in round one of the NAB Cup at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

Having made a good recovery from the serious shoulder injury that sidelined for much of 2010, the 23-year-old is brimming with confidence.

"I'm hanging out to get down to Skilled on Sunday and take on the Dogs and Cats and hopefully come away with two wins," Anthony told a media conference at AFL House on Thursday.

"I've been through the process with the doctors and physios and they've given me the all-clear, so I'm pretty happy with the way my shoulder is at the moment.

"My strength is back to normal and it's now up to me to get myself mentally right."

The Kangaroos narrowly missed the finals last year, but Anthony said the team was aiming much higher this time around.

"[Going to] Utah was a cornerstone of our pre-season and it was a great initiative by Brad Scott and the board members of North Melbourne," he said.

"As a result we're fitter than we've ever been.

"We're young, but that's no excuse. We feel we're going to make the finals and that's not a maybe. We feel that we're going to make the top-eight this year.

"I think you can look forward to a young and enthusiastic bunch of boys that are willing to take this club back to where it belongs, and that's September."

Anthony said the players were not fazed by reports suggesting the club was in financial trouble.

"We have the utmost respect for James Brayshaw and the directors," he said.

"We just concentrate on football. We think the club has never been in better shape financially and off the field.

"James and his board have done a fantastic job in getting us to where we are. Every one of the 46 blokes on our list believes we can play finals and we've got all the resources we need to take us there."

The Kangaroos are set to field a young team down at Geelong, with high-leaping ruckman Majak Daw expected to get plenty of game time along with the club's first pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, Shaun Atley.

"[Atley] exudes speed out of stoppages and he's just exciting to watch," Anthony added.

"He's burned some of our best players off, so everyone out in the public should be looking at Shaun Atley as a key member of our team for this year."

Liam Anthony is a $355,600 midfielder in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
