It's been a long and patient wait for Daniel Wells, but the 25 year-old made his long awaited return to football on Saturday against Hawthorn.

While it may have only been a NAB Challenge match, it was an important step in Wells' comeback from injury with the number eight playing his first game since June last year.

"It was pleasing. He had a good crack. We were hoping he'd play today and we got a half out of him. He's well on track in terms of his preparation," assistant coach Brett Allison told kangaroos.com.au.

Wells started on the ground for the Roos and was thrown straight into the action by coach Brad Scott, lining up in the centre square for the opening bounce.

He had several important possessions in the first quarter and booted the opening goal of the match from close range. Playing between the midfield and deep in attack, Wells went on to kick another two majors before sitting out the second half.

"He looked pretty comfortable. He's a classy player so it was good to see him fit back into things pretty easily. I had a chat to him and he's pulled up really well so hopefully he recovers well. We'll be looking to maybe get about three quarters out of him next week and then he should be right for round one."
