Selected with North Melbourne's first pick in the 2009 National Draft, Cunnington was always going to get plenty of attention in his first season.

A stress reaction in his foot early in the new year did little to dampen his spirits, and he was back in full flight at North Ballarat in the VFL by the start of April.

Brad Scott wasn't going to be rushed into promoting Cunnington though and he waited until round five and a trip to the apple isle to call upon the young midfielder.

Cunnington took time to adapt to the speed of the game, but showed improvement with every game he played.

He finished the season with a string of good performances and is certain to spend more time in the midfield in 2011.

AFL.com.au’s Steve Lavell says:
"Rebounded from a pre-season foot injury for a round-five debut and held his place. Lacks pace but is hard at the contests and clearances and has huge capacity to learn. Could become a handy option at half-forward."

Highlights: Round 16 v Richmond - 18 possessions, 9 tackles

Round 18 v Western Bulldogs - 19 possessions

Ben did show a lack of awareness when he had the footy early on, but he did get a bit better as the season went on. In the Anthony Stevens mould & should be a great asset to the kangas. If he can improve his peripheral vision, awareness & leg speed a bit, then we are on a winner.

Bens as hard as they come, shown in his first or second game against hawthorn, throwing himself at the contests... Really enjoy seeing him compete! Another pre season is sure to help!
