Incidents assessed:
Contact between the GWS Giants’ Dawson Simpson and St Kilda’s Jack Newnes from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was thrown in from a boundary contest and Simpson contests the ruck. The ball goes to ground loose and Newnes comes towards the ball in a bid to win possession. Simpson also seeks to win the ball, coming from the opposite direction, and the GWS’ player has his hands down towards the ball as contact is made with Newnes. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Simpson was seeking to contest the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.
Contact between Port Adelaide’s Lindsay Thomas and the Geelong Cats’ Jack Henry from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. After viewing the available vision, the ball was handballed to Henry from a teammate. The Geelong player is seeking to direct the ball downfield and is pressured from behind by Port Adelaide’s Chad Wingard. As Wingard begins to tackle Henry, Thomas comes towards him from the front and contact was made to the Geelong player’s chest as he handballed the ball away. As contact was made to the chest, no further action was taken.
Contact between Hawthorn’s Ryan Burton and North Melbourne’s Shaun Higgins from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The ball is in possession of Higgins who was seeking to head down ground as he moved away from the contest. Burton comes toward his opponent and chooses to bump him. Contact was made between Burton’s shoulder and Higgins’ chest with contact also occurring with an accidental clash of heads. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that the Hawthorn player executed the bump with contact to the body and could not have reasonably foreseen a clash of heads between the players. Burton’s conduct was not unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken.
