JAEGER O'Meara will take another big step in his comeback on Saturday when he's expected to play 80 per cent of Gold Coast's NEAFL match against the Brisbane Lions.
O'Meara played a half of football against Southport on Saturday - his first game since rupturing a patella tendon last April.
Gold Coast has made a point of not rushing the star midfielder's return and will take a steady approach to integrating him back into the senior team.
If everything goes well, O'Meara will play the Lions at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, then look to play the entire NEAFL match against the Sydney Swans in Newcastle the following week.
He would then either play another NEAFL match or possibly be in line to play Fremantle in round 18.
Coach Rodney Eade said on Saturday the Suns' fitness staff would dictate the load on O'Meara in coming weeks, but he was still a way off returning to the AFL.
"The jump up, and we've seen with other players not as good … can struggle at the higher level because of the intensity, so we've just got to be mindful of that," Eade said.
"It's still a fair way to go and I don't think we as a club should put that expectation on him.
"We've just got to let him increase his footy and increase his level of fitness and increase his exposure to the game at his speed and we'll see how it goes."
Veteran wingman Matt Rosa is getting his hamstring scanned on Monday afternoon with Gold Coast expecting results either that night or Tuesday morning.
Rosa was taken off during the first quarter of Saturday's win over St Kilda.
It was the opposite hamstring to the one he injured against Melbourne in round seven, and although Eade said post-match it was a relatively minor strain, the club is expecting Rosa to miss two to three weeks.
