THE WESTERN  Bulldogs will receive a compensatory selection at the end of round one in one of the next five national drafts for losing defender Jarrod Harbrow to join Gold Coast.

On Monday the 22-year-old, who was raised in Cairns, became the fifth uncontracted player to join the Suns, joining Nathan Bock, Nathan Krakouer, Michael Rischitelli and Campbell Brown.

The compensation to the Bulldogs is the same awarded to Hawthorn for Brown and Adelaide for Bock.

The Dogs lost Saturday night’s preliminary final to the St Kilda, and Harbrow wasted no time revealing his future, which had been the subject of speculation all year.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna said Harbrow, who played 69 matches with the Bulldogs, had found his mark as a rebounding damaging defender.

“He is a very popular and respected player because of his desire to succeed, training habits and competitive edge,” he said.

“His defensive work and courage underpin his performance, which then lights up with attacking run and carry and sublime skills.

“In future we may see him spend more time up forward or in the midfield.”

In a statement, the Bulldogs said they understood the reasons behind Harbrow's decision.

"We left no stone unturned in our efforts to retain him, but unfortunately the lure of returning home to Queensland proved to be too strong," said football manager James Fantasia.

“We invested a lot into the development of Jarrod, and he has been a fantastic player for us."

In other news from Whitten Oval, veteran Nathan Eagleton has announced his retirement. The 31-year-old played 277 games, 56 of them for Port Adelaide from 1997-99, and represented Australia in the 1999 and 2005 International Rules Series.
