Versatile forward Brent Staker is likely to line up down back when the Lions meet Fremantle this Saturday night at the Gabba in the absence of Matt Maguire who was suspended for one game by the AFL Tribunal last night.

Maguire’s failure to beat the rough conduct charge has left a gaping hole in the heart of the Lions’ backline with regular full-back Daniel Merrett still a week away with a hamstring strain.

Looming large for the Lions is Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich, but Staker is prepared to match up against the man who has already kicked an equal-high 24 goals in six games this season.

“We’ve played on each other a few times as midfielders, so lining up at centre half-back will be new territory,” Staker said. “But you’ve just got to attack it and play well.”

Staker has played every match since joining the Lions last October averaging just over 14 disposals a game and kicking three goals.

However, he remains wary of a Fremantle team with plenty of momentum coming off a stirring derby win over the West Coast Eagles last week.

“It’ll be interesting. There will be a lot of fire in the belly and they’re in the top four so it will be a good challenge for us.”
