MELBOURNEfc has made three changes to the team to face Fremantle on Sunday afternoon. Matthew Whelan, Matthew Bate and Colin Garland have all been recalled, as the Demons look to gain their first win of the year.
The trio come into the squad at the expense of Lynden Dunn and Daniel Bell, who have both been omitted, and Colin Sylvia, who withdrew due to a hamstring complaint.
The experience of Matthew Whelan will be well utilised down back, as he returns after serving his one match suspension for striking Carlton’s Brendan Fevola.
Matthew Bate gets his first senior call up for the year after three impressive performances at VFL level, where he showed his versatility, playing effective football as a midfielder.
He will be joined by the talented Colin Garland, who last week was a late withdrawal from the side. Garland - who turned 20 during the week - is a mobile player who has the capability to play forward or back.
Simon Buckley, Daniel Bell and Lynden Dunn are the emergencies for the match.

Kick-to-Kick on the ‘G for Kids’ Day
It’s all about our junior supporters this Sunday against Fremantle, with lots of activities both inside and outside the ground for our junior members and supporters, who are the future of our Club.
To celebrate the 150th birthday of MELBOURNEfc, the MCC has allowed us to welcome back one of football’s great traditions, and a rite of passage for any child. After the game, all fans will be allowed to set foot on the hallowed turf for a kick-to-kick session (weather permitting).
This is the first time that this has been permitted for the 2008 season, and may be the only chance that fans of any club get to take the field this season.
Free Kids’ Day activities include:
- All fans can have a kick-to-kick on the ground after the game (weather permitting)
- Meet non-playing players and Club Mascot Ronald Deeman outside Gates 3 and 5
- Flag giveaways at membership marquees (Gates 3 and 5)*
- Kids’ entertainers outside the MCG before the game
