A BROKEN thumb might have ended Stephen Coniglio's season, after the Greater Western Sydney midfielder underwent surgery for the injury.

The club says the 20-year-old will miss the next six weeks as he recovers, meaning he will be racing to be fit for the Giants' final game of the season, against the Western Bulldogs on August 29.

Coniglio, who has averaged 22 possessions across 14 games this season, suffered the injury in last week's loss to Adelaide at Spotless Stadium.

Though the surgery was confirmed on Saturday, Coniglio was already one of five changes to the Giants' line-up which will take on Fremantle on Sunday at Patersons Stadium.

The midfielder joined the Giants as pick No. 2 at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, and has played 44 games for the club in its three seasons.

He has been in particularly good form over the past three weeks, averaging 27 disposals in a strong patch.
