The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 1.

FORMER Essendon champion Dyson Heppell will kick off his Smithy’s VFL career when he runs out alongside a new-look and star-studded Port Melbourne line-up in what shapes as one of the biggest tests of the season against the Brisbane Lions at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday.

The stars are being rolled out across the entire competition, with Geelong’s Mitch Duncan to play in the VFL for the first time since 2010, while St Kilda gun Liam Henry will debut for Sandringham in what could be a mouthwatering head-to-head battle.

All up, a stunning 104 recruits will represent their new clubs for the first time across the nine Round 1 matches.

Heppell is among 13 recruits to line up for the Borough against the Lions, six being straight off AFL lists, including his Bomber teammates Tex Wanganeen and Jayden Davey as well as Charlie Lazzaro, Dom Bedendo and James van Es. There are five more from State league clubs, headed by former Norwood full back Tom Graham.

But they will be without star defender Fraser Rosman, who copped a one-match suspension for rough conduct during a practice match, while another leading recruit in Kaine Baldwin is not ready.

Reigning premier Werribee will also look vastly different in its Grand Final rematch with Southport at Fankhauser Reserve, with 10 recruits to take the field alongside 13 premiership players.

Tigers fans will get their first look at the brothers of Brisbane Lions flag winners Hugh McCluggage and Kai Lohmann in Myles McCluggage and Jake Lohmann respectively.

Star Southport signing Sam Lowson will play his first game for the Sharks among five arrivals that includes former Sydney VFL player Christian Webster, who wasn’t able to break through for a club debut last season, and Darby Scott, the brother of North Melbourne’s Bailey.

Sandringham has a league-high 14 first-gamers in its team to meet Geelong on Sunday, with Henry joined by Saints draftees Tobie Travaglia, James Barrat, Hugh Boxshall, Alex Dodson and Patrick Said, ex-Carlton player Jack Carroll and SSP ruckman Harry Boyd.

Former Blue Jack Martin will make his Geelong debut in the VFL alongside Duncan and returning big man Nathan Kreuger, with draftees Jay Polkinghorne and Patrick Retschko and Charlie McCartin, the younger brother of Tom and Paddy, to also step out.

Draftees Jonty Faull, Thomas Sims and Jasper Alger will debut for Richmond against Coburg at Beaconsfield, with the Lions to unveil big-name recruits Jack Bytel and Matt Allison alongside Casey premiership player Ryan Valentine.

Nine new Northern Bullants headed by former Brisbane Lion Riley Greene and ex-Collingwood defender Kaden Schreiber will take on the Footscray Bulldogs at Mission Whitten Oval, with the Bulldogs to unveil top draftee Cooper Hynes alongside Luke Kennedy.

Williamstown heads to the NEC Hangar to meet Essendon with the most settled team in the VFL. Sandringham signing Hugo Hall-Kahan is the only recruit in the Seagulls’ line-up.

Meanwhile, the Bombers will let loose draftees Angus Clarke, Kayle Gerreyn, Zak Johnson, Rhys Unwin and Archer Day-Wicks alongside North Melbourne recruit Tyler Sellers and Carlton signing Dom Akuei.

The Box Hill Hawks and Carlton will wheel out almost completely new-look teams when they open the Smithy’s VFL season at IKON Park on Friday night.

The Hawks have named seven recruits among 11 players who did not line up in last year’s elimination final loss to Williamstown as they aim to soar back into premiership contention.

Chief among them is Ethan Stanley, who returns after an AFL stint with Fremantle, star Footscray recruit Trent Bianco and former Werribee pair Kye Declase and Corey Preston.

Box Hill will also unveil Hawthorn’s first draft pick Noah Mraz, who has been named at full back after having his 2024 season with the Dandenong Stingrays ruined by injury, as well as rugby league convert Matt Hill and Balwyn recruit Jack Sammartino.

The Blues have even more changes, with a whopping 15 players set to run out who did not play in the narrow loss to Richmond in the final round last year.

Former Hawk Ethan Phillips will play his first game for his new club desperate to prove his old one wrong among five high-profile recruits.

He will be joined by SSP recruit Francis Evans after losing his AFL spot and former Swan Cooper Vickery, while father-son arrival Ben Camporeale and fellow draftee Harry Charleson will also make their VFL debuts.

But there is no Hawthorn recruit Denver Grainger-Barras or GWS signing Cooper Hamilton in the line-up.

Collingwood will unveil three draftees – South Australian Charlie West, West Australian Will Hayes, and Sydney Swans Academy graduate Joel Cochran when they meet the Sydney Swans at Victoria Park, while Swans first-round draftee Ned Bowman will also play his first game for the club.

North Melbourne has named a strong line-up, with Adam Tomlinson to debut against his old club Casey Demons at Casey Fields, while first-round draft pick Matt Whitlock will also play his first game alongside the experienced Darcy and Ewan Macpherson St Kilda/Sandringham recruits Olli Hotton and Ollie Lowe, Werribee arrival Matt Keast and father-son selection River Stevens.

The Demons will be without new captain Deakyn Smith, who will miss the game against his old team due to a one-week suspension for rough conduct in last week’s practice match loss to Coburg and star recruit Mitch Hardie.

However, draftees Harvey Langford and Ricky Mentha will play, as will ruckman Tom Campbell, fellow St Kilda signing Riley Bonner and Werribee addition Wardell Lual.

BROADCAST AND STREAMING: All matches in the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App. Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast a match live and free on 7mate in Victoria and on 7plus Sport nationally every Saturday night. This week’s broadcast match will be Footscray Bulldogs vs Northern Bullants.

RADIO: The Carlton vs Box Hill Hawks match will also be broadcast on Casey Radio 97.7FM and caseyradio.com.au from 6.35pm and on 3WBC 94.1FM and 3wbc.org.au from 6.30pm.
