ST KILDA veteran Sam Fisher has been cleared of structural damage to his jaw after being taken to hospital following the Saints' 70-point loss to the Sydney Swans.

Fisher was flattened in a clash with Swans ruckman Toby Nankervis on Saturday night, clutching at his jaw and immediately taken from the ground in the third quarter.

The 34-year-old, who is not contracted beyond this season, was released from hospital later that night and will be assessed over the course of the week.

St Kilda said it would provide a further update on the backman's injury status on Tuesday.

It remains unclear whether Fisher will feature in the remaining two games of the season.

If the injury is serious enough to end his season, it could also draw to a close his 13-year, 226-game career.

"He's gone to hospital just for some checks on his jaw … well have to wait and see on that one," coach Alan Richardson said after the Saints' loss. 

"'Fish' committed strongly to the ball. It was one of those awkward bounces, and a collision coming the other way."

Fisher has enjoyed an accomplished career with the Saints, winning two club champion awards (2008 and 2011) and earning All Australian selection in 2008.

A member of the Saints' Grand Final teams in 2009 and 2010, Fisher's future would be discussed at the end of the season, Richardson said. 

"We've still got a couple of weeks to run and we'll just have to wait and see and have those conversations respectfully at the end of the year," the coach said.

Nankervis could be in hot water with the Match Review Panel for the bump that ended Fisher's night, laying the crunching hit on the Saint after he released a handball.

After receiving attention from trainers, Fisher, who had also battled hamstring tightness against the Swans, came from the ground and did not return. 

The Saints were also hit with injuries to defender Jarryn Geary and ruckman Tom Hickey on Saturday night.

Hickey played through a lower left leg issue until the final quarter when it was clear the result was beyond doubt and Richardson said he would be sent for scans.

Geary, meanwhile, suffered back soreness coming out of last week's win over Carlton and seized up in the Saints' warm-up pre-game. 

"He's a real warrior, he's a tough bugger, and he thought he'd be right," Richardson said.  

"Just as part of the tackling stuff they do inside he seized up a bit after some contact."

While disappointed that finals now appear beyond the Saints, Richardson said he was proud of the players' efforts over the past month as the team pushed to feature in September.  

"There's no doubt that our guys in this last period when there has been a really slight chance – and clearly that's all it's been – have really been strong," the coach said.

"They have wanted to stay alive as often as possible.

"So from that point of view we've been pretty proud about the way they have embraced it and challenged themselves to be as strong as they can irrespective of the opposition.

"We're equally as disappointed with the second half … and we won't let ourselves off the hook there, we'll learn from it."
