The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 2.
Former Adelaide Crows defender Will Hamill heads Frankston’s impressive list of recruits to step out for the Dolphins in the Smithy’s VFL Saturday night clash against Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium.
The Peninsula product makes his VFL debut after 45 AFL games for the Crows and will be joined by former Williamstown spearhead Corey Ellison, returning forward Bailey Lambert and a trio of ex-Zebras in 2024 vice-captain Darby Hipwell, Tom Blamires and Tarkyn O’Leary.
Former Dolphin Connor Riley will play his first game for Port Melbourne after 50 at Kinetic Stadium and will face off against brother Lachy in an interesting addendum.
Sydney Swans Academy pair Ned Hawkins and Max Rider have moved south from the Harbour City and join Fraser Rosman (suspension) and Sam Philp in the Borough line-up.
New recruits Tex Wanganeen and Jayden Davey, key forward Matt Signorello and key defender Tobe Watson were omitted from the team that lost to the Brisbane Lions in Queensland last week.
Essendon has been boosted by the availability of AFL regular Jayden Laverde alongside Will Setterfield and ruckman Vigo Visentini for its battle with Werribee at NEC Hangar on Saturday.
Laverde has missed the start of the season with a hip injury and is unlikely to spend too much time at VFL level before regaining his spot, while Setterfield has had a groin injury and Visentini is back from suspension, with AFL debutant Saad El-Hawli elevated.
The reigning premiers have recalled flag pair Sam Conway and Jay Dahlhaus as they aim to avoid going 0-2 to start the season.
North Melbourne has axed two former AFL players and a VFL star for its trip to face the Box Hill Hawks, as draftee Luke Urquhart makes his VFL debut and Miller Bergman plays his first game of the year.
Connor Downie, Olli Hotton and Ewan Macpherson have been squeezed out of the team that drew with Casey last week, with Riley Hardeman promoted to the AFL.
The Hawks have beefed up their defence with recruit Sam Durdin and AFL omission Sam Frost included, but that weakens the forwards with Luke Breust promoted and Daniel Wood surprisingly left out.
GWS Giants will unveil three of its prized 2024 draftees when it opens its season against Williamstown at Blacktown International Sports Park, with No. 19 selection Harrison Oliver, No. 24 pick Cody Angove and No. 36 Jack Ough to all make their debuts.
Oliver, a defender off the Sandringham Dragons production line, arrived with Harry Perryman’s compensation selection, Angove is a lively wingman from Western Australia and onballer Ough is from New South Wales via the GWV Rebels.
They are among six new Giants, with Ovens and Murray squad member Jaiden Butson and assistant coach Brett Montgomery’s second son Louie Montgomery to also debut, while midfield journeyman Perry Lewis-Smith will become a five-club VFL player.
The Seagulls will be desperate to bounce back after being overrun by Essendon, but they’ll have to do it without injured skipper Cam Polson, although springheeled forward Nick Ebinger has overcome a cork to replace him.
New Casey captain Deakyn Smith will lead his team for the first time when he returns from a pre-season suspension for the Demons’ clash with Gold Coast Suns at Casey Fields on Saturday morning.
He will be joined by recruit Lachlan Bryce and AFL returnees Dan Turner, Blake Howes and Taj Woewodin for what is Bailey Laurie’s 50th game, but the Demons lose star defender Marty Hore to another calf injury, while Jack Billings and Harvey Langford have been promoted.
The Suns have three debutants among seven recruits, headed by Southport SSP signing Ben Jepson, with draftee Asher Eastham, former Fremantle ruckman Max Knobel and Sandringham Dragon Miles Enders playing their first VFL games. GWS Giants Academy draftee Cooper Bell, former Sun Aiden Fyfe and returning VFL player Fraser Cameron will also line up.
Southport made one change for its game against Coburg at Fankhauser Reserve, being forced to replace star recruit Sam Lowson after his devastating ACL injury last week, with Palm Beach-Currumbin youngster Tai Hayes to debut.
The Lions have two debutants in Braedyn Gillard’s little brother Jordyn Gillard and VAFA giant Dom Payman, while Collingwood recruit Jon Tomasiello forces his way in as three key players drop out including livewires Josh D'Intinosante and Kyle Weightman alongside key defender Josh May.
Sandringham has three debutants to take on Richmond at RSEA Park. Sandringham Dragons pair Jack Cheep and Sam Buck and VAFA mature-ager Will Johnson come into a team that will be without the unavailable Max Heath and Angus Hastie and the promoted Tobie Travaglia.
The Tigers made five changes to the line-up that beat Coburg last week, losing star midfielder Tyler Sonsie to the AFL along with Oliver Hayes-Brown and Austin Johnson. New recruit Tom McKenzie, Sydney signing Phill Moimoi and debutant Sam Flockart come in.
Geelong unveils Peel Thunder recruit Taj Wyburd to face the Northern Bullants at GMHBA Stadium as former Collingwood forward Jay Rantall also plays his first game for the Cats, with Mitch Duncan and Oli Wiltshire on the plane to Brisbane with the AFL team.
The Bullants have named Collingwood recruit Harry Flynn and Essendon arrivals Amin Naim and Charlie Bolmat among five unforced changes for the trip to the Cattery.
