LANCE Franklin kicked his 100th goal, but rival spearhead Brendan Fevola finished one goal short of his ton as Hawthorn finished the home-and-away season on a high.

The Hawks coasted to a 78-point win, 24.15 (159) to 12.9 (81), but the result was of only passing interest as attention focused on the sparring between the Coleman Medal rivals.

Fevola was held scoreless in a first half that belonged to Franklin, but kicked seven goals in the second half, and with 10 minutes to play was just three goals behind Franklin.

Fevola won a free kick after landing a tackle in the goal square to kick his 99th goal deep into the final quarter, and was denied pleas for two more free kicks as the clock wound down. But Hawthorn controlled possession in the final minutes to leave Fevola stranded.

Franklin , 21, needed just 25 minutes in the first quarter to kick the two goals he needed to bring up the milestone. He was hurried from the ground as fans swarmed onto Telstra Dome, holding up play for around 10 minutes.

The match itself was a much less dramatic affair than the battle of the two full-forwards. The Hawks powered away in the opening half, with Franklin’s brace among six unanswered goals. The lead was 25 points at quarter time, 38 points at the half and 55 points by the last change.

Jarryd Roughead kicked five goals of his own in a last-quarter sideshow that would have provided the highlight of many games, but on this occasion was completely overshadowed by Fevola’s quest.

Sam Mitchell (28 possessions), and Brad Sewell (23) did the damage in the midfield as Hawthorn romped away with the contest. Luke Hodge was brilliant in his first match back from suspension, with 32 possessions, while Jordan Lewis was excellent with 35 and Campbell Brown (three goals) solid in another cameo attacking role.

For the Blues, it was all about the young guns, with Bryce Gibbs (32 touches) and Marc Murphy (36) leading the charge, while Chris Judd (31) was in impressive touch.

The Hawks will finish second and play the Western Bulldogs in a qualifying final next week, while Carlton has mad Monday to look forward to.
