FILL-IN Richmond captain Jack Riewoldt is set for another stint on the sidelines, with a right knee injury spoiling his return to the field on Wednesday night. 

The Tigers' injury woes continued when Riewoldt left the ground for good early in the last quarter, after a wrist problem kept him out for the previous three matches.

The news follows skipper Trent Cotchin suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, and with champion defender Alex Rance (ACL) as good as certain to miss the season. 

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, who oversaw his side's impressive 43-point defeat of Melbourne, was unsure how much time his 252-game forward would miss.

"It's his right leg, so his good leg, (and) it's a PCL-type injury. We're not exactly sure of the extent of that but he'll miss some time, unfortunately," Hardwick told reporters. 

"How long that is, we're not exactly sure. We'll get some scans obviously done pretty quick, but it's disappointing. 

"He's worked incredibly hard to get back, and then to hurt his other knee … is really disappointing, so we're hoping for the best but he'll obviously miss some footy."

The triple Coleman medallist compiled 16 disposals (10 contested), six marks (four inside 50 and three contested) and eight score involvements in barely 80 minutes before his night ended.

Hardwick said Riewoldt had remained in good spirits despite the injury.

"I reckon initially, once you probably find out you're hurt and you're going to miss some time, you're disappointed – but Jack's a pretty vibrant type of character," the coach said. 

"He was cheering as loud as anyone on that bench and barking instructions and it's the sort of guy he is. 

"He's been through this before and he understands it and he'll deal with it and he'll be disappointed for a while. 

"But he'll be trying to make those around him better – that's what a good leader does, and that's what he'll do." 

Riewoldt may be looked at by the Match Review Officer for a possible 'chicken-wing' tackle on Bayley Fritsch, but the action did not appear to be too malicious.
