What it means for Essendon: Every game is vital for the Bombers as they make a late charge to the finals. At 7-7, they need to get ahead of the ledger and win a game that's expected of them. They clutched a late victory last week against the Giants that has given them a chance at making the top eight – they need to prove they can go on with it.

What it means for Sydney: The Swans have won five of their past seven games and found some form after their shocking start to the season. Although a finals spot is unlikely, if they are any hope they need to knock off a fellow hopeful that is around them on the ladder. 

The stat: This is the first time Essendon will host Sydney at the MCG since 2004 when the Bombers won by 10 points.

The match-up: Mason Redman v Tom Papley

The Bombers will be hoping to clamp down on Sydney youngster Tom Papley, who has booted 25 goals this season and is a livewire. If they want to keep Adam Saad and Conor McKenna free to run wild, it could leave Mason Redman to do the job. Papley is ranked the sixth best small forward in the Official AFL Player Ratings.

It's a big week for: Nick Blakey

In his first AFL game at the MCG, the exciting Sydney youngster and NAB AFL Rising Star will need to play a key role for the Swans in attack as they continue to be without the injured Lance Franklin.

Big call: Michael Hurley to be best afield for the Bombers in a dominant display across half-back with 28 disposals and 10 marks.
