Partner ORGANISATION OVERVIEW
AFLPNG was established in 2000 to represent the AFL in PNG. With a focus on community based development and junior talent. AFL PNG Development programs have been designed and implemented with a strong focus on community.
AFL PNG Development has an impressive record of growth and success in terms of participation. AFL PNG Development currently has 16 Full time staff across PNG with over 40,000 active participants in organised school, community and village programs as well as competitions across PNG, with more than 100,000 other juniors having been exposed to AFL PNG Development programs yearly since 2001.
AFL PNG Development’s purpose is to provide quality community based programs for Male’s & Female’s focused on developing our youth. By using our sport, as a vehicle for community development and lifestyle choices. The AFL PNG Development Niukick program is our flagship program; AFL PNG Development’s Niukick program is used to deliver development programs to schools and communities all over the country.
The main target group for AFL PNG Development are Male’s & Female’s within local PNG communities all around the country. Children aged 5-18 years of age.
- ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW
This assignment will provide us with an opportunity to provide on the job training to more of our people, particularly AFLPNG Development Officers who work in Lae. This requires someone with the technical nous and experience to deliver training, coaching and education sessions that develop the skills involved with administrating, organising and delivering AFLPNG Development programs.
- ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
- Increase awareness of AFLPNG Development programs in Lae, educating and training our development staff to ensure best practises in planning, delivering, reporting, financial acquittal and data collection.
- Increase staff and community understanding of gender, health and lifestyle issues by incorporating them in all community engagement programs focussed on ‘sport for development’, in particular, AFLPNG Development’s Pilai Long Senis program.
- To ensure the inclusion of all people directly affected by the volunteer assignment in the course of your work with the partner organisation and host community, including implementing strategies that relate to:
- promoting gender equality and empowering women,
- disability inclusion, and
- child safeguarding.
- DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE VOLUNTEER
In consultation with their line manager and relevant stakeholders, Australian volunteers complete a work plan in the first three (3) months of their assignment. The duties below are an indication of the type of work that may be involved in meeting the Assignment Objectives:
- Develop the capacity of staff to provide better support for junior football programs, school clinics, Paradise Foods Niukick and Pilai Long Senis. This includes administration and organisation, through to delivery, reporting and data collection.
- Develop a safe and inclusive environment for all AFLPNG activities in the community through strengthening policies, programs and community engagement.
- Encourage staff to plan and set goals, through the use of calendars, communication, events and best reporting practices.
- Support training and courses for women to be involved in all AFLPNG Development programs, through the Pilai Long Senis program, and assist in the expansion of Youth & senior Female competition’s in Lae.
- Develop and/or maintain partnerships with local, regional and international organisations, local and national government, professional and peer networks, with particular importance on the relationship with the Lae Senior AFL Committee.

- Level 1 AFL Coaching Accreditation (or ability to obtain prior to embarking)
- Experience as a coach/player in Australian Rules Football

Working Relationships
The volunteer will work AFL PNG Development’s Lae based staff, Development Officer’s, Senior AFL Committee: Committee of local volunteers administering the AFL Competition and Administration Officer. Working Hours
As it is the sporting industry, there are no set hours, to accommodate such things as training during evenings, and football competitions on weekends. As such, the volunteer will have flexible working hours which will best suit the requirements of the role, and the volunteer.
The expectation is that the volunteer will work the equivalent of a 5 day week to a maximum of 40 hours per week.
Leave Entitlements
All volunteers are entitled to 20 days leave per 12 months, unless otherwise advised.
Same conditions and terms as local colleagues apply, including national holidays.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional indemnity insurance is not provided for Australian volunteers. You should consult your partner organisation about the need for professional indemnity insurance for your role prior to your departure, and where required, you are advised to obtain adequate professional indemnity insurance from a reputable insurance provider.
Other Conditions
If required to work after hours, volunteer is entitled to time off in lieu because there is no overtime pay provisions.
Language Skills and Level Required
Willingness to learn local language – this will be very helpful and break down barriers quickly.
Language Support
Language support is provided during the in-country orientation period. Most often, additional resources for further development later in the assignment will be available if required.
- LIVING AS A VOLUNTEER
Lae is an industrial hub and the second city in PNG, a flourishing municipal centre that has road links to Madang and Highlands Provinces. Lae climate is tropical, similar to other parts of PNG but Lae experiences regular rainfalls throughout the year.
Lae has recreational amenities such as sports oval and hotels for social gathering and sports where expatriates and locals can access and socialise and with a high number of the expatriate’s community, there is always social activities happening. Also, Lae host many cultural events such as the Lae cultural show which happens every October of every year with cultural groups from all parts of PNG performing.
Volunteers working in PNG need to aware of the reasonable risks of living in PNG, and the restrictions of operating as a volunteer in Lae, including not being permitted to drive for business or private purposes. Volunteers will use security transport service to and from work, operated by a locally engaged reputable security transport firm, however this does not extend to work related movements throughout the workday – this remains the responsibility of the Partner Organization.
The official languages are Tok Pisin, English, and Hiri Motu. Tok Pisin is the most widely spoken, however, up to 850 different languages are spoken in PNG.
- ALLOWANCES & SUPPORT
These allowance levels are based on the Cost of Living in the host country location. Allowances will be reviewed periodically and may increase or decrease. Volunteers will be given notice of any change to the allowance level.

Housing
AVI lease’s long-term accommodations for volunteers in Lae and pays the landlord direct, therefore there is no accommodation allowance payable to the volunteer. The accommodation is carefully selected, and will contain basic furniture.

The Australian Volunteers Program recognises and values the enhanced skills and expertise of returned volunteers as a result of their volunteering experience.
