Other Incidents Assessed:
Contact between Port Adelaide's Sam Powell-Pepper and the Gold Coast Suns' Lachie Weller from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. Powell-Pepper takes possession of a loose ball and transfers the ball from his right hand to left hand. As he is taking possession of the ball, he is confronted by Weller, who seeks to tackle him. As Powell-Pepper moves the ball in his possession, he seeks to break through the tackle from Weller with a fend with his right arm. A free kick was paid at the time to Weller for high contact. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Powell-Pepper was seeking to evade the tackle and his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. It was his view that the free kick was the appropriate decision on the ground and no further action was taken.
Contact between the Sydney Swans' Lance Franklin and Fremantle's Joel Hamling from the second quarter of Saturday night's match was assessed. The ball has come loose after an attempted handball from Sydney's Gary Rohan. Franklin runs towards the ball to take possession and takes possession with his left hand. The Sydney player is immediately tackled by Fremantle's Ryan Nyhuis and is also confronted by Hamling, who attempts to tackle as well. Franklin firstly attempts to fend off Hamling with his right hand, before shrugging his left arm, which is holding the ball, in a bid to break the tackle of the two Fremantle players. High contact is made to Hamling, as Franklin seeks to break clear, and the Sydney player releases a handball to his teammate under pressure. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Franklin was seeking to evade the tackle and his actions while in possession of the ball were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.
Contact between St Kilda's David Armitage and Collingwood's Taylor Adams from the fourth quarter of Saturday night's match was assessed. Collingwood's Josh Thomas has the ball. Adams is in close proximity and awaits a potential handball from his teammate. Armitage comes towards Adams, anticipating to pressure him if he receives the ball. Thomas elects to handball instead to Lynden Dunn and Armitage, who is in a near stationary position, elects to make contact with Adams with a bump. After viewing all available video evidence and receiving a medical report from the Collingwood Football Club, it was the view of the Match Review Officer there was no forceful high contact made and Armitage’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.
Contact between Melbourne's Bernie Vince and Carlton's Dale Thomas from the first quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. The ball is loose with Vince and Thomas coming towards the contest from opposite directions. Vince elects to bump and jumps into the air, making high contact with Thomas. A free kick was paid at the time to the Carlton player. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Vince's actions were careless but the force in the contact was below that required for a charge to be laid, considering that Thomas immediately got to his feet and continued in play. No further action was taken.
Contact between Richmond's Shane Edwards and West Coast's Jack Redden from the third quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. Contact was made with an open hand and was below the force required for a charge to be laid. No further action was taken.
