GOLD Coast coach Stuart Dew says he's not surprised by David Swallow's public announcement he wants a long-term deal with the Suns.

Swallow told News Corp he was open to an early extension of his current contract that expires in 2019.

"We weren't surprised by that," Dew said on Wednesday. 

"I think everyone knows Dave and where his heart lies. We're pretty keen, we've made no secret of that.

"You know Dave, he doesn't say things for the sake of it. He's invested."

Swallow was the club's inaugural number one draft selection in 2010, and after persistent knee problems, has had consistent seasons in the past two years.

Following the recent news that co-captain Tom Lynch wants out, Swallow's words are music to the ears of the Suns' hierarchy.

Swallow, 25, said he was keen to extend his deal before the end of this year.

"Absolutely," Swallow said.

"I love the Gold Coast and I really want to stick around and find success with the Suns.

"We will finish off playing this year and then I'll speak to the club at the end of the season."

Swallow and captain Steven May will both become free agents in 2019, and football manager Jon Haines said he would put an offer in front of both players at season's end.

Swallow has often been linked with a move back to his West Australian home, but with brother Andrew living close by at Byron Bay, Swallow is content with life in Queensland.
