THE SAINTS have been forced to make a sixth change to their line-up for Friday night's clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium with midfielder Seb Ross ruled out with illness, believed to be gastro.

Bailey Rice will return to the side for his seventh game for the season.

The Blues will go in with the team they submitted on Thursday night, which featured five changes.

The loss of Ross means the Saints will have six new faces in their team from last week after losing Paddy McCartin (foot sprain), Logan Austin (groin) and Nathan Wright (knee) and omitting Billy Longer and Darragh Joyce.

Jake Carlisle will return from the punctured lung that ruled him out against Port Adelaide last week, while Tom Hickey has dislodged Longer after two good weeks in the VFL and will face off with Matthew Kreuzer.

Rowan Marshall, Ed Phillips and Jack Lonie have also earned recalls.

Former Gold Coast rookie Matt Shaw will make his club debut for Carlton after being named alongside Kade Simpson, Harry McKay, Paddy Dow and Jarrod Garlett.

Defender Caleb Marchbank will play despite being checked in hospital last week after developing an elevated heartrate during the Blues' loss to Brisbane.

The Blues were forced to make four changes with Jacob Weitering (calf), Andrew Phillips (hamstring), Darcy Lang (ankle) and Matthew Wright (soreness) leaving the side, along with Nick Graham (omitted).

The game will kick off at 7.50pm AEST.
